Valerie’s Story

I thought I was too young for a joint replacement. I’m a hairdresser, mother and grandmother, and eventually the pain and limited mobility became too much for me. I have a lot of living to do and I just grew tired of the constant pain. I turned to Charles Cole, MD, with SUN Orthopaedic Group, Inc. and the Joint Replacement Center at Evangelical Community Hospital.

As a hairdresser, it was not easy to be on my feet all day, and the constant pain was so frustrating. I also babysat my two young grandchildren during the day and found it difficult to run around and play with them. I told Dr. Cole I was ready for the surgery and he got on board to help me right away.

The morning after my surgery, the nurses woke me up early and told me that it was time to get up, get dressed, put on my sneakers and start walking. I was thrilled with the fact that I was in my own street clothes and not a hospital gown. I got dressed on my own (with supervision from the staff) and made my first few steps out of bed. I couldn't believe that I wasn't experiencing much pain after this surgery and was even more surprised that I could walk.

I continued on through treatment and therapy during my stay at Evan. The nurses were so responsive to my requests when I did develop some pain after the surgery. They controlled it so quickly for me. I definitely give my experience at Evangelical a 10.

I am back to standing and doing hair after only a few short weeks and I haven’t slowed down since. I’m a new woman, with a new knee, and enjoying life to the fullest.
