Evangelical Community Hospital
New, Advanced Laboratory Service
Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women, and the most preventable. Countries with established Pap screening programs have reduced cervical cancer related deaths by up to 70%. Having a Pap test every year allows your doctor to detect early changes in your cervix before they can become cancerous.
Even with the success of pap screening, there are limitations. Samples can be taken which include blood, mucus or other obscuring material. With the new SurePath liquid based pap test, used at Evan Hospital, unsatisfactory smears due to these obscuring materials have been reduced dramatically.
In addition, any time a pap screening in the Evangelical laboratory appears suspicious, an additional test, called an HPV test, can be performed using the sample already submitted for the pap (so there is no additional office visit). This additional test helps to direct the physician in a proper course of action for follow-up.
