Mammography is currently the most accurate single method of detecting cancer of the breast in its very early stages, when it is most curable, and both 2D and 3D digital mammography is available at the Center for Breast Health.

3D Mammography

A Genius 3D mammography exam is very similar to having a traditional 2D Mammogram. Like a 2D mammogram, the technologist will position the patient, compress each breast, and take images from different angles. The compression level is the same as a traditional mammogram and only takes a few seconds longer for each view. A very low amount of X-ray energy is used during a 3D scan and is well within the FDA safety standards.

A 3D mammogram produces clear, high resolution images of breast tissue that radiologists can read a layer at a time, much like reading a book. Instead of viewing as a flat image, fine details of masses or distortions associated with cancers and precancerous cells, are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. It gives the radiologist a more accurate view of what is going on inside the breast.
Several large studies have shown that Genius 3D mammography detects 41% more invasive breast cancers and reduces the chance that you will need to be called back for additional views by up to 40%.
Genius 3D mammography is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram regardless of age or breast type – for both screening and/or diagnostic mammogram. For women with dense breasts, this 3D mammography technology combined with the additional option of 3D ultrasound will catch cancers that can often be missed by using standard mammography alone.

When To Get Screened

The American Cancer Society recommends the following mammography screening guidelines:

  • Ages 30 to 35 – annual mammograms for women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer
  • Ages 35 to 40 – baseline mammography
  • Ages 40 and over – annual mammogram, continuing as long as the woman is in good health
