Evangelical Community Hospital Helps Keep Kids Safe

5/25/2011

Evangelical Community Hospital is sponsoring two events to help local kids have a safe summer. The first event will be a Bike Helmet Giveaway on Tuesday, June 7 from 4-6 pm at the Lewisburg McDonald’s. The second will be the Child Seat Safety Event on Friday, June 24 from 2-6 pm at the Community Health Center at Evangelical, located next to Staples on Route 15 in Lewisburg. Children should bring a new or gently used book to donate. This event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, over 500,000 people are treated for bicycle- related injuries annually. Children under 15 account for 59 percent of these injuries. “Wearing a bicycle helmet can drastically reduce the chance and severity of head injuries. Many children are not wearing helmets or are wearing ones that do not fit correctly,” says Nichole Hockenbrock, Director of Community Health Education. With summer just around the corner, Evangelical Community Hospital wants to ensure children have access to proper helmets for safe bike riding.

Evangelical and the event sponsors, Susquehanna Valley Safe Kids and Kiwanis of Lewisburg, and Buffalo Valley AM Kiwanis would also like to ensure that children are riding in properly installed car seats. Over 85 percent of children are riding in the wrong seat for their height and weight. Parents can bring in their child’s seat to the Child Safety Seat Event to have it checked. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 3-14 years of age. With summer trips coming up, Evangelical wants to help parents keep children safe while on the road. For more information, contact Community Health Education Center at (570) 768-3200.
