Classes

Childbirth Education Classes

Whether you’re a first-time parent or just in need of a refresher course, Evangelical offers a childbirth education course that will help you prepare for the labor and delivery of your new baby.

Prepared Childbirth

A 4-week program for expectant parents during the last three months of pregnancy. Classes help you prepare for the physical and emotional effects of labor and delivery.

Weekend Prepared Childbirth

This 1-day childbirth preparation class is for those who can’t attend weekly sessions. We’ll cover everything you need to know about labor and delivery, breathing, and relaxation exercises in this one, accelerated class. Because you’re only attending one session, we encourage you to practice what you learned in class at home.

Refresher Prepared Childbirth

Has it been a few years since your first childbirth class? Or, are you attempting a vaginal delivery after a cesarean section? This class is for you. A certified childbirth educator and labor nurse leads this private, one-on-one refresher class. You’ll need to be at least 32 weeks pregnant to take this class, which we tailor to meet your needs in relaxed, personalized environment.

Newborn Care

This 4-hour class helps new parents and other caregivers learn how to take care of a new baby. Topics include diapering, bathing, breast and bottle feeding, and newborn appearance as well as post-partum depression and caring for the new mother.

Prenatal Breastfeeding

This 1-night class is for expectant parents interested in the advantages of breastfeeding and anyone who may be providing support to the new mother. Topics include common problems and solutions, proper positioning of the baby, frequency of feeding, supply and demand, and other issues.

Hello Baby

This 1-night course is for children ages 2 – 10 who are anticipating the birth of a sibling. Parents and children will watch a video titled “Sibling Silly” and learn about diapering, swaddling, and how to hold a new baby. Children are welcome to bring a favorite stuffed animal or doll.

Consider Cloth

This 1-night class provides information about the benefits of cloth diapering. Different styles of cloth diapers will be available for a hands-on experience.

Child Safety Seat Inspections

In this individualized session, Evangelical’s certified child safety seat technician will educate and instruct parents in how to properly install their child’s safety seat.clo

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccination Clinics

This clinic, held at our Community Health and Wellness Center, provides Tdap vaccines to expectant fathers and other household members 18 years of age and older who will be living with a new baby born at Evangelical.

CPR & First Aid Courses

Whether you’re a healthcare provider in need of certification or a member of the community who wants to be prepared to handle emergencies, we offer an American Heart Association CPR or First Aid course to meet your needs or goals.

Healthcare Provider CPR

This American Heart Association course is for the healthcare provider in and out of hospital settings in need of CPR certification. Students will learn how to initiate the Chain of Survival; perform prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adults, children, and infants; initiate early use of an AED; relieve choking; and more.

First Aid with CPR and AED

This American Heart Association course is for anyone who wants to learn basic first aid skills and how to give CPR to an adult, child, and infant; use an AED; assess the scene of an emergency and phone your emergency response number; and help a choking adult, child, or infant.

Heartsaver® CPR

This American Heart Association course is for anyone who wants to learn how to give CPR to an adult, child, and infant; use an AED; assess the scene of an emergency and phone your emergency response number; and how to help a choking adult, child, and infant.

Heartsaver® First Aid, CPR and AED Skills Class

This American Heart Association class teaches students the cognitive information needed for first aid, CPR and AED training. It is intended for anyone with little to no medical training in need of a course completion card. An American Heart Association Basic Life Support instructor or Heartsaver® instructor oversees this class, which includes hands-on practice and testing. Participants must complete a required online portion of this training through the American Heart Association website before taking this class.

HeartCode® BLS Skills Check Class

This structured, hands-on session in basic life support is for healthcare professionals who want an alternative method of completing an initial or renewal basic life support course. Participants must complete the on-line portion of this course through the American Heart Association website before taking this class. Sessions include a variety of eLearning techniques such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning and interactive activities to teach students basic life support knowledge and skills.

Health and Wellness Programs

Evangelical knows that staying fit, disease prevention, and necessary intervention are essential tools in helping you achieve your health and wellness goals. That’s why we offer a wide range of programming designed to meet your needs.

Yoga

Yoga helps you improve and maintain overall health by building strength, flexibility, and balance while releasing stress. This 6-week course teaches you how to listen, meditate, stretch, relax, strengthen, and breathe.

Staying Strong

This 6-week program is for women of all ages who are seeking a safe, fun, and challenging strength-training program. Sessions focus on improving bone density, muscle growth, flexibility, and balance and include the use of light weights and body resistance techniques to help shape and tone.

Freedom From Smoking®

Quitting smoking isn’t easy – but it’s easier with the right help. The American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program provides options, resources, and support to help you quit for good! During the program, you’ll develop a plan of action that will lead to your quit day. You’ll also receive the support you’ll need to remain smoke free for life. Learn more

Why Weight

A certified health coach and registered dietitian leads this 6-week weight management program. Topics include healthy meal planning, exercise, and behavior modification strategies to help you change your lifestyle and achieve gradual, lasting weight loss.

Safe Sitter

This 1-day comprehensive babysitting course is for children ages 11 and older. Participants learn everything they need to know to gain the skills and confidence needed to do the job well and earn parents’ trust. The course includes certification in American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR.

AARP Safe Driver

One of Evangelical’s Senior Strong programs, AARP’s Smart Driver course teaches safe driving techniques that can make a difference in your life and community. The course covers defensive driving methods and safety strategies to help refresh your knowledge of the rules of the road. After completing this course, you may be eligible to receive an auto insurance discount. Talk with your insurance agent for details. 

Cost: $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

CarFit

CarFit is a Senior Strong program that offers a quick but comprehensive check of how well you and your vehicle work together. A CarFit technician will ask you simple questions and complete a 12-point CarFit checklist.

Live Your Best Life

Live Your Best Life is a self-management program for those with chronic health issues. In this 7-week class, participants learn how to manage conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, chronic pain, depression, COPD, heart failure, or other health issues. Topics include nutrition, exercise, medications, communicating with your doctor, pain, fatigue, and action planning.

Talk With the Doc Seminars

Evangelical offers “Talk With the Doc” seminars on a variety of health topics throughout the year.

Germ City

For children, as well as older adults who prepare food in their homes, Evangelical offers Germ City: The Clean Hands, Healthy People program. An entertaining but informative program that can come to your school, organization, or event, Germ City teaches participants about the serious but invisible problem of germs. Learn more

Other Educational Programs for Children

Evangelical offers a wide range of free educational programs for children. Topics cover nutrition, how to have a healthy heart, Hands Only CPR, the dangers of tobacco products, summer safety, stress management, personal hygiene, and online safety. Learn more

To help those age 55 or older live an active, healthy lifestyle, Evangelical offers our Senior Strong program. This free membership program includes health screenings, flu shots, exercise classes, seminars on a variety of health topics, brown bag medicine checks, and other programs designed especially for seniors. Speakers Bureau

Evangelical offers a Speakers Bureau within our service area to provide important health-related information on a variety of topics to the members of our community. If your group, club, or business organization would like to request a speaker, please contact us at least four weeks in advance and provide us with:

  • the name and description of your group or organization
  • your contact information 
  • your first and second choices for topics 
  • the date, time, and location of the meeting
  • directions to the meeting location
  • the approximate number of people you expect to attend
  • your expected length of time for the presentation (including question and answer session)

Cost: Free* 
*However, if your group normally offers speakers an honorarium, we ask that you make a similar donation to the Evangelical fund of your choice.
