Classes

Childbirth Education Classes

Whether you’re a first-time parent or just in need of a refresher course, Evangelical offers a childbirth education course that will help you prepare for the labor and delivery of your new baby.

Prepared Childbirth

These four-week classes are for all expectant parents during the last three months of pregnancy. They prepare parents for the physical and emotional effects of labor and delivery of the baby. Classes are offered on four consecutive Wednesday evenings or in one all-day Saturday format.

Refresher Prepared Childbirth

Has it been a few years since your first childbirth class? Was your previous birth experience not what you expected? Are you attempting a vaginal birth after cesarean? Then this is the class for you. Led by a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, labor nurse, and mother, couples are provided with evidence-based information covering current labor techniques. The class is tailored to meet your needs in a personal and informal atmosphere.

Newborn Care

This four-hour class is designed for parents and caregivers taking care of a newborn (birth to three months of age). Topics include diapering, bathing, breast and bottle feeding, and newborn appearance, as well as post-partum depression and care of the new mother.

Prenatal Breastfeeding

This one-night class is for all expectant mothers and support persons interested in discussing the advantages of breastfeeding. Topics covered include: common feeding problems, positioning of the baby, frequency of feeding, supply and demand, and many other areas of concern.

Child Safety Seat Inspections

In this individualized session, Evangelical’s certified child safety seat technician will educate and instruct parents in how to properly install their child’s safety seat.

CPR & First Aid Courses

Whether you’re a healthcare professional or a member of the community who wants to be prepared to handle emergencies, we offer American Heart Association CPR or First Aid certification courses to meet your needs or goals.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers 

This American Heart Association course is for the healthcare provider in and out of hospital settings in need of CPR certification. Students will learn how to initiate the Chain of Survival; perform prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adults, children, and infants; initiate early use of an AED; relieve choking; and more.

Heartsaver® Adult/Child/Infant CPR

This American Heart Association course is for anyone who wants to learn how to give CPR to an adult, child, and infant; use an AED; assess the scene of an emergency and phone your emergency response number; and how to help a choking adult, child, and infant.

Heartsaver® First Aid, CPR and AED Skills Class

This American Heart Association class teaches students the cognitive information needed for first aid, CPR and AED training. It is intended for anyone with little to no medical training in need of a course completion card. This course includes hands-on practice and testing. Participants must complete a required online portion of this training through the American Heart Association website before taking this class.

HeartCode® BLS Skills Check Class

This structured, hands-on session in basic life support is for healthcare professionals who want an alternative method of completing an initial or renewal basic life support course. Participants must complete the on-line portion of this course through the American Heart Association website before taking this class. Sessions include a variety of eLearning techniques such as dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities to teach students basic life support knowledge and skills.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course

This course will guide instructor candidates through the process of becoming a certified BLS instructor. They will need to complete the online essentials course, provide a current BLS provider card, and have registered as a new instructor on the America Heart Association website prior to the classroom portion of the Instructor Course. After the classroom portion the successful candidate will need to instruct a “monitored” class to complete their instructor requirements.

Hands Only CPR

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. You can be a part of the solution. Knowing how to do Hands Only CPR can help save lives. This is not a certification and there is no test required. Participants will learn the signs of cardiac arrest, what to do in case of an emergency, and practice the skills to perform Hands Only CPR.

Health and Wellness Programs

Evangelical knows that staying fit, disease prevention, and necessary intervention are essential tools in helping you achieve your health and wellness goals. That’s why we offer a wide range of programming designed to meet your needs.

Freedom From Smoking®

Over the course of eight sessions, learn to overcome tobacco addiction with the help of a certified educator through this FREE program. The seven-week program can give you the tools you need to be smoke-free and enjoy the benefits of a healthier you. Call 570-768-3200 to schedule an appointment with a certified facilitator.

Safe Sitter

This 1-day comprehensive babysitting course is for children ages 11 and older. Participants learn everything they need to know to gain the skills and confidence needed to do the job well and earn parents’ trust. The course includes certification in American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR.

Safe@Home

This free, 90-minute program for students in grades 4-6 program is designed to prepare students for their first steps towards independence. Topics covered include how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Learn more

AARP Safe Driver

AARP’s Smart Driver course teaches safe driving techniques that can make a difference in your life and community. The course covers defensive driving methods and safety strategies to help refresh your knowledge of the rules of the road. After completing this course, you may be eligible to receive an auto insurance discount. Talk with your insurance agent for details. See upcoming dates

CarFit

CarFit is a program that offers a quick but comprehensive check of how well you and your vehicle work together. A CarFit technician will ask you simple questions and complete a 12-point CarFit checklist.

Evangelical offers “Talk With the Doc” seminars on a variety of health topics throughout the year. Learn more

Educational Programs for Children

Evangelical offers a wide range of free educational programs for children. Topics cover nutrition, how to have a healthy heart, Hands Only CPR, the dangers of tobacco products, summer safety, stress management, personal hygiene, and online safety. Learn more

What You Need to Know About Prediabetes 

Join Tammy Heim, RN, Community Health and Wellness, as she discusses preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Speakers Bureau

Evangelical offers a Speakers Bureau within our service area to provide important health-related information on a variety of topics to the members of our community. If your group, club, or business organization would like to request a speaker, please contact us at least four weeks in advance and provide us with:

  • the name and description of your group or organization
  • your contact information 
  • your first and second choices for topics 
  • the date, time, and location of the meeting
  • directions to the meeting location
  • the approximate number of people you expect to attend
  • your expected length of time for the presentation (including question and answer session)

Cost: Free* 
*However, if your group normally offers speakers an honorarium, we ask that you make a similar donation to the Evangelical fund of your choice.

Events

Bike Helmet Safety Program
Does your child need a bike helmet or is his or her helmet more than five years old? If the answer is yes, join us to learn about bike safety and receive a properly fitted bike helmet. This event is for children 12 and under. This event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Buffalo Valley in Lewisburg, Inc.

Senior Health and Fitness Day
Evangelical participates in the nationwide Senior Health and Fitness Day program, typically held on the last Wednesday in May. The event is designed to provide an overview of resources available in the local community with the common goal of keeping older Americans healthy and fit. Learn more
